Stressed glass looks lovely when seen through a polariscope but is a glassmakers nightmare, hidden from the naked eye! These samples show the difference between a fine annealed piece of glass (left) and a ‘stressed’ piece of glass (not annealed properly) (right). The large amount of residual stress would most likely cause the glass to crack or shatter at some point in time and it could happen at any time. These examples are @kglakademi_glass_and_cerseen through the university’s polariscope. A polarised light beam passes through the transparent glass and reveals the residual stress in the glass after cooling. A good exercise for the students to see whether they are annealing their glass properly!

In the studio making a model in clay today for a fairly large new piece of work for a big Sally and Richard joint exhibition opening later this year. I LOVE this stage of the creative process. Can’t wait to see the finished sculpture in glass… going to be some time yet though!
