Inhale Exhale : Monumental glass spire elevated above a stainless steel structure

Year : 2016
Dimensions : H330 x W25 x D25 cm

The monumental glass spire of Inhale Exhale expresses a single moment of poise, a pause, to breath in and out and experience a moment of calm.

A soaring spire of brilliant optical glass reaching up is cradled and supported by an uplifting stainless steel structure.
The polished surfaces of the stainless steel and glass work together and separately to confuse and delight the eye, where is the boundary of surface, what is inside, what is outside and what is drawn in as a reflection of the surrounding environment.

The surface texture and internal detail of the cast glass add more layers of detail and another language to explore in the form.

Inhale Exhale can be appreciated at a distance as an elegant vertical form, an intriguing ray of light touching the earth, and closer to, as an exciting and complex object which can be explored both visually and by touch.

Inhale Exhale was first exhibited in an exhibition titled ‘Reflection’ at Salisbury Cathedral in 2016. Reflection, curated by Jacquiline Cresswell, challenged the selected artists to respond to the context of the cathedral and its 900-year history.

Richard and Sally were inspired by the architecture and engineering of the tower and spire of Salisbury Cathedral, as well as the personal marks inscribed by the craftsmen onto the fabric of the building that you can still see and touch today.

Inhale Exhale featured in Richard and Sally’s exhibition Inspirer Expirer at the internationally important Musee du Verre Francois Decorchemont, France in 2023.
