Eternal Exchange XVIII : Circular Mirrored Glass Sculpture with Gradated Blue Painted Exterior

Sally’s ‘Eternal Exchange’ sculptures are sublime experiences of earthly, unearthly places. In this series of cast glass sculptures, various forms and scales have emerged. Hand carved internal protrusions have subtle variations, some are pronounced, some eroded, others disappear from sight. Mercurial space, always in motion, created by hand mirroring on polished curved planes opens up new dimensions, at times remote, that seemingly were not there before. Layered, textured outer polychromatic painted surfaces, rich in their visual absorption are alluringly tactile. Each piece is a timeless, associative narrative, with many possible outcomes.

Eternal Exchange XVIII was selected for the Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass 2022. The competition is open to professional artists living in, or who originate from, Europe and who work with glass as a material creating one off artworks.

Circular bright mirrored optical glass sculpture with carvings inside

Working with the notion that everything is part of a continuous sensitive system of interactions, Sally explores interactions of visible and invisible possibilities, the place where the physically apparent and the intangible meet.

Her ‘Eternal Exchange’ series has evolved from research voyages out at sea around the Arctic coastline of northern Norway recording the complexities of the constantly shifting mood of the environment where earthly, unearthly experiences of space presented themselves.

These sculptures are an expression of the continuous exchange of energy the universe, from the physical inspiration of the continuous movement of energy exchanging in the elements out at sea to atomic exchange in space.

Cold-working skills open up a world of sculpting glass. We both have years of on the job learning, investing in the right equipment along the way for the work we have wanted to make. There is so much room for creativity in how we work with glass after it is cast. Rising to the challenges creatively keeps potential and quality of outcomes developing.
This large variable speed flatbed is a vital part of making our work. It is a joy to use. It has a beautiful 36 inch flat cast iron plate. We specifically asked for it to not have the fixing nut sticking up so that we can grind large pieces using the whole width of the plate.

Here Richard is grinding the base of a 45 kg sculpture to get its core balance just right.
We achieve this with Sally turning the wheel by hand to get it started and then grinding using a slow mechanised speed. #glasssculpture #jacksonfawkesglass #coldworking #grinding #creativity
